Background of the Study
Shift work is a common practice in nursing, enabling hospitals to provide 24-hour patient care. However, irregular and long shifts can negatively impact nurses' productivity, mental health, and job satisfaction (Adeyemi & Hassan, 2024). Studies suggest that shift work, particularly night shifts, can lead to fatigue, reduced cognitive function, and burnout, which affect the quality of care provided to patients (Ogunyemi & Bello, 2023).
In Sokoto State Specialist Hospital, nurses frequently work long hours due to staff shortages, which may impact their efficiency and overall well-being. Prolonged shift work can lead to sleep disturbances, decreased concentration, and higher error rates in patient care (Eze et al., 2024). Understanding how shift work influences nurses' productivity will help in developing strategies to optimize work schedules and improve healthcare delivery.
Statement of the Problem
Despite the necessity of shift work in hospitals, its effects on nurses' productivity remain a concern. Many nurses in Sokoto State Specialist Hospital work under strenuous conditions, often with minimal rest between shifts. Studies have shown that excessive shift work can result in decreased job performance, higher absenteeism rates, and increased stress levels among nurses (Usman & Ibrahim, 2023).
There is limited research on the direct impact of shift work on nurses' productivity in Sokoto State. This study seeks to assess the challenges associated with shift work and propose solutions to optimize scheduling for improved nurse performance.
Objectives of the Study
1. To examine the impact of shift work on nurses’ productivity in Sokoto State Specialist Hospital.
2. To assess the relationship between shift work patterns and nurse burnout.
3. To propose strategies for improving work schedules to enhance productivity.
